WSJ Reading...

What I thought when I read the article from WSJ ("Strike a Powerful Pose") was "That is what I need to do when I have to speak in front of many people!!" However, I am still surprised that a pose changes a person's hormones and behavior, and it influences listeners. So I searched the example of public speech on YouTube.

This is the video of public speech by the student who were afraid of making a speech in front of many people. He keeps leaning forward when he talks, tries to make eye contact to people in every direction. Finally, I understand the effect of a powerful pose, because the effect of a pose may give him the courage to speak his story at the day of graduation ceremony...

We will be able to change our poses if we practice, because it is really simple thing, at least it is easier than acquiring "Social Intelligence"... (we don't have to pay $2000 per hour lol) So let's practice this from this week!!

One more thing to emphasize: do not use smartphone before meeting or presentation!!

  1. I liked this video clip! Leaning forward really makes him looks having confident!
I am afraid of talking in front of people even though in a small group. But I realized nobody feel comfortable in front of many people. Showing your confidence by changing your posture a little bit may be a great way to overcome nervousness. So as you say, I would like to practice in the class or even outside class.

  2. Hi Shiori :D
It was surprising for me as well that poses can change a person's hormones and mind. When we did the blah, blah, blah activity, we could keep leaning forward and making eye contact etc. quite easily because we didn't have to think about other things at all. But in a real situation, we need to focus on what we talk and our pose at the same time and I imagine it would be far more difficult...so maybe what we can do is practice, practice and practice...let's do and improve our speech skill together!;)

  3. Hi Shiori,

Thanks for introducing yourself and your thoughts on power posing. The power posing information will be great for making you more effective with your debating.

  4. As Ken says, we should utilize what we learned in the class when we debate!

  5. Finally watched the speech—it's great! While I don't like it when speakers lean on the podium, his message is fantastic!
